Can someone explain crating to me? Is it really necessary?
Q. I just adopted a sweet dog and she will be home alone with 4 cats for about 6 hours a day while I work. I've heard people crate their dogs while they are away. I'm not sure about that. Do you just put your dog in a cage? How big is the cage supposed to be? Is it really necessary?

A. Having a kennel for your dog is a great thing. Don't think of it as a pen or a jail - it is their den, their lil' corner of the world where no one else bothers them and they can go for some "alone" time. A crate/kennel can be metal or plastic and should allow enough room for your pet to stand and sit comfortably as well as lie down. A too large crate could encourage accidents, as they will use one corner as a bathroom and the other for sleeping. Always leave your pet with something appropriate and safe to chew on to keep him/her occupied. A few examples are Kongs stuffed with kibble, treats, smeared with peanut butter, a leg bone, or Nylabone. Make sure the item is big enough that your dog will not swallow it. Walk your dog… [cont.]

Any tips on crating my two dogs? They whine and bark, all the time, when they are in it. Especially when I?
Q. leave... They sometimes get into fights and I want to separate them to make sure they don't kill each other. Paddy my pug is whining in the crate as I type this and it's annoying. I have two crates, Paddy the pug was starting to fight and chew on my other dog, so I put Paddy into the crate to calm him down. Guga is sleeping here while Paddy is whining. I want to leave them both out but Paddy picks a fight with Guga. It's not play-fighting. Paddy bit Guga's eye (popped his blood vessel and got a scratch on his eyelid which has since healed without a vet visit), and then the next two fights Guga scratched up Paddy's cheeks. Now when they seem to be about to get into a nasty fight after play-fighting (they usually start growling), I put them… [cont.]

A. I agree with the suggestion to get two crates. I like to use the dog's meals to get them comfortable with the crates. Start by putting the dog's dish just inside the crate, so he can stand outside and stick his head in and eat. Every day, move the dish back about an inch. We want the dog to be comfortable going in the crate. You can also play the game of tossing a treat in the crate, so that he has to go in to get it. I use the command "In" as I toss the treat or put the dish down. Gradually, he'll be comfortable walking into the crate. When the dish is at the back wall of the crate, close the door when he eats, and release him as soon as he's finished. I usually ask the dog to "Sit" before I open the door -- it's part of my "Sit [cont.]
