From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Wood is an organic material; in the strict sense it is produced as secondary xylem in the stems of trees (and other woody plants). In a living tree it conducts water and nutrients to the leaves and other growing tissues, and has a support function, enabling woody plants to reach large sizes or to stand up for themselves. However, wood may also refer to other plant materials with comparable properties, and to material engineered from wood, or wood chips or fiber. People have used wood for millennia for many purposes, primarily as a fuel or as a construction material for making houses, tools, weapons, furniture, packaging, artworks, and paper. Wood can be dated by carbon dating and in some species by dendrochronology to make inferences about when a wooden object was created. The year-to-year variation in tree-ring widths and isotopic abundances gives clues to the prevailing climate at that time. FormationWood, in the strict sense, is yielded by trees, which increase in diameter by the formation, between the existing wood and the inner bark, of new woody layers which envelop the entire stem, living branches, and roots. Technically this is known as secondary growth; it is the result of cell division in the vascular cambium, a lateral meristem, and subsequent expansion of the new cells. From Wikipedia under the

Can i paint straight away with solid deck paint? Q. After i replace the warped wood, i would have some new wood and some old wood, i want to repaint the whole deck, can i do that? or do i have to wait for the pressure treated wood to dry out? Thanks! Asked by Phil Scolari - Mon Jul 28 11:26:06 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. always let pressure treated wood dry out for at least one season. Or if you replaced in early spring, perhaps it may be ready to do by fall. However do not paint a deck...use a good quality stain either semi-tranparent or solid stain, otherwise you will constantly be scraping, sanding and re-painting Answered by larbran7 - Mon Jul 28 11:37:07 2008 Whats a way to treat wood to preserve it and to kill possible bugs? Q. I'm looking to treat a piece of wood I found in the woods. Its the bark of a bug eaten tree and I want to kill the bugs and treat the wood to preserve it. Whats the best way to do this? Asked by BetterRedThanDead - Sun Sep 9 21:31:37 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. If you really want to presserve the wood... Try to treat it with "SOLIGNUM" as far away from your home. The risk of bringing in the bugs from the bark may spread to your home. After that you can varnish the wood this will double protect and kills the bug that is left... but still if its not very important just leave it be or burn it to prevent spread. Answered by Melvin U M - Sun Sep 9 22:06:24 2007 How does the use of cedar wood effect ladybug and butterfly populates in houses made for them?
Q. I've heard from multiple sources that cedar wood is best for bird and bat houses because of its insect-repellant attributes and the fact that out of all the woods on the market, it apparently lasts longest. My question is .. does the cedar wood used for butterfly and ladybug houses REPEL the bugs they're made for? I don't want to make a butterfly house out of cedar only to have all the butterflies in my area flee from it. Help! Thanks. Asked by probi_expo - Sat Feb 28 21:57:35 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Have you tried googling it? I have found tons of sites for ladybug houses. You might want to try that, type in: ladybug houses butterfly houses and then you can try: what repels ladybugs what repels butterflies and see what ladybugs and butterflies do not like, and then you can decide from there which type of wood to use. :-) Answered by Mom of 2 great boys - Sun Mar 1 05:09:37 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "wood" |
